Leah Broker grew up in rural Missouri, the third of seven children. She attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, receiving a four-year academic scholarship. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Marquette in 1989.
After college, Leah went directly to law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, receiving her J.D. in May 1992. After passing the July 1992 N.C. Bar exam, Leah began practicing law in Asheville.
Since beginning to practice, Leah has maintained membership in numerous voluntary bar associations as well as been active in leadership roles within the legal profession and in the community. She served as President of the N.C. Association of Women Attorneys, was a board member and President of the Western Carolinians for Criminal Justice, was a board member of Pisgah Legal Services, and is a participant in the Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyer program at Pisgah Legal Services. Leah is currently serving on the Call4ALL Task Force of the N.C. Bar Association.
In the community Leah is a member of the Women for Women giving circle and served on their membership committee, is on the Board of Directors of the YWCA of Asheville as well as the Board of Directors of the Western Carolina Medical Society Foundation.
